About Us
The Friendly Wool Company produces handcrafted wool and knitwear from Shetland sheep in North East Scotland. The very best fleeces are selected, hand-prepared, and hand-spun to create beautiful Shetland wool, full of natural colours, texture, and softness. The resulting skeins of wool offer a unique knitting experience, ideal for creating traditional and high-end fashion knitwear, bespoke to both the creator and the wearer.

What We Get Up To
Something special happens when our "Friendly Wool" is created.
All the many processes contribute to producing a high-quality wool product — shearing with traditional shears, washing the fleece by hand to maintain natural oils and vitality, drying naturally on racks in the sun and wind, hand-spinning straight from fleece to preserve as much natural texture as possible, or hand-teasing and carding before spinning to create a traditional wool style. After spinning, all of our wool receives a second hand-washing with a delicate, wool-friendly soap in warm water, which brings the fibers to life and helps create our unique brand of wool.

A Little Bit of History
It all started in 2015 when we bought three Shetland ewes with their lambs and taught ourselves how to shear and spin their fleece.
Our local town of Portsoy, in North East Scotland, held its first-ever wool festival in 2017. We saw this as an ideal opportunity to support the event and showcase our wool to the many keen crafters who attended. We were met with lots of positive comments and sales...so began our woolly journey.
The success continued, which gave us the confidence to offer our skills to others. In 2018, we approached Moray Reach Out, a local charity, which enables adults with learning difficulties to carry out meaningful work. They became involved in all processes from washing the fleece to knitting and weaving. We still offer advice, provide fleece and part-time staffing.
The Friendly Wool Company continues to support others in the local community, with individual spinners and knitters providing their skills to create wonderful artisan products. We just love this cooperative way of working — it is a win-win for all involved!
